Walking Walmart

Nearly everyone you see walking down the street has something on their head.  They are either carrying something home  or to work, or selling the item on their head.  Those that sell on their head are called "hawkers".

These are palm nuts.  They express palm oil from them which is a staple food here.

They learn this skill very young.

You can literally buy almost anything off a head.  Hawkers walk the street with the cars trying to flag down business.

Some of the loads (usually by women) are HUGE!  They need 2-3 people to help them get it on and off their head.  Most old women are bent over and in constant pain from blown discs.

Kids bringing home wood to cook with.

A family affair.

Hawker in traffic.  This one is selling airtime for cell phones.  Motorcycles make their own lanes!

Boys hauling water for Alice.

Notice the square glass box - so you can see what is for sale.  Hang everything on an umbrella for the best visibility and you can sell in the shade!

Onions, tomatoes, or juice?

Toiletries, or eggs anyone?

I think the reason everyone is happy here is because you have to keep your chin up, or your load will come down!

It's amazing to watch these guys RUN with their load on their head!

Can your 7 year old carry a cooler on their head?

You don't see to many adult men carrying anything on their head.  Usually they lead their women who are laden to the hilt!  Elder Asay wanted this pic because he is wearing overalls.

Look Ma - no hands...NOT!
